Getting people to speak the same language when talking about standards and processes is always difficult, no matter where you work. It’s particularly difficult, however, if your organization doesn’t even speak the same actual language. "We're a global company," says Jason, a director in the Global Practices group, "and the service experience should be as consistent as the product experience, no matter where you are." It’s a critical goal for our company, and Jason helps make it happen all around the world.

Many people would be surprised to know that a third of EMC is in services. The Global Practices group is a solution-led, strategic consulting organization. Jason works throughout the group to ensure consistency in the processes, methodologies, systems, and tools EMC uses on the front lines. Our hardware organization is familiar with this principle, which Jason brings into the services realm. "Where the hardware people would be focused on specifications and manufacturing, I’m focused on processes and methodology," he says.

This task is complicated by the variety of ways that Global Practices interacts with a customer. "Some are engaged in the first conversation, helping the customer understand their problem and formulate specific solutions to handle it," he explains. There are also situations in which consulting salespeople partner with hardware salespeople—to include services in conversations that are already taking place. Sometimes, the client has chosen a specific product, and there’s an opportunity to add services to the mix and help solve a larger problem.

Jason feels that his entrepreneurial spirit is one of the key strengths that helps him succeed in this position. "I'm a builder," he explains. "I like to make things work, so the personal satisfaction comes from seeing these teams learn how we operate and plug into the organization and act like they were here all the time." He finds EMC to be a work hard, play hard culture. And even though we’re a multi-billion-dollar company, this entrepreneurial spirit still prevails. And Jason should know—he’s been to every corner of it.
